Smith Home Furnishings has a long evolving history that dates back to 1921 when the Smith’s Uncle Jim and Aunt Clara Tremble established a mattress factory in their garage.  Their family made old cotton mattresses by hand and expanded into upholstering furniture, all a skill learned through practice and experience.  The business developed into mainly manufacturing mattresses then added furniture after moving to a building they owned at 847 N. Union .  The name of the company was “Ponca City Mattress Company”.

In 1974 Robert and his wife Mildred Smith purchased Ponca City Mattress Company and renamed it “Smith Home Furnishings”.  Their two sons Larry and Roger joined their parents in this endeavor and later their daughter Karen moved back home to join the family business.  The success of the business continued to enlarge and grow to the point that more space was needed.

In 1989 the store purchased “Grand Galleria” located in downtown Ponca City at 417 E.   Grand the former historic old “Montgomery Wards” building built by Conoco’s Oil Baron E. W. Marland and the famous architect John Duncan Forsyth.  An additional building right next door also built by Marland and architect John Forsythe in an art deco style was purchased by the Smith’s in 1994 from the Jay G. Paris family, who for many years prior to that year had used the building for a large furniture store.  The two buildings together provided over 22,000 sq. ft. of wonderful old charm and architecture for displaying the many furniture lines and accessory’s that were sold by Smith Home Furnishings.

Smith’s continued to grow and its needs changed to the point that a new location on the North side of town on 14th St. (the busiest street in the county) was desired.  A great opportunity opened for Smith’s when a location on 14th St. became available that once was occupied by a large auto dealership.  The location was an answered prayer to the needs for Smith’s growing business and method of operation.  We are thrilled that we were able to move to this location to continue to grow and expand to meet the needs of our customers.

Today Smith’s operates out of its new location as of Nov. 2004 located at 2500 N. 14th St. here in Ponca City.  We are so thankful to God first and to our community that has supported us for so many years and we love doing business in such a wonderful town as Ponca City.  We are very proud of our “team” that works very hard each day to earn our fine customers business and seek always to provide a beautiful showroom with great values and furniture and accessories that our customers can afford and enjoy in their homes for years to come.  We are committed to being the best furniture store in Northern Oklahoma and Southern Kansas and customer satisfaction is our number one priority!
